Chateau de Montreuil Bellay - Vallée de la Loire
Montreuil Bellay - 49260 - Maine et Loire - France

“Four families and ten centuries of history...”
It is the continuity and attachment of these families, rooted in the Montreuil-Bellay region, that has ensured the survival of the Château to this day.

1025 1662

The Berlay family (1025-1217); carried down through the female line to the Melun-Tancarvilles (1217-1417), the Harcourts (1417-1488) and the Orleans Longuevilles (1488-1662); then sold to Charles de la Porte, Maréchal de La Meilleraye in 1662.

1662 1756

The La Meillerayes carried down through the female line to the Cossé-Brissacs (1662-1756); then sold to Charles Godfrey de La Trémoille in 1756.

1756 1822

The La Trémoille family (1756-1822), dispossessed under the Revolution, were subsequently reinstated, before selling to the Niveleau family in 1822.

1822 2006

The Grandmaisons, heirs of the Niveleau family, from whom descend the present owners.

This amazing collection of buildings is marked with great architectural variety, bearing witness to the four families who have lived here since 1025. The enduring charm of this château, which is now open to the public, is due to the dedication and long attachment of these families over the years.
