Built overlooking the Thouet river, the Château of Montreuil-Bellay is right in the centre of the
Loire valley. It is situated within the
Anjou region, where some of the most magnificent pages of ’s history have been written, at the confluence of Angers-Poiters and Saumur Niort.
Montreuil-Bellay holds an important place among the many magnificent Châteaux of the Loire such as Chaumont, Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise, Le Clos Lucé, Villandry, Azay le Rideau, Chinon, Langeais, Ussé, Saumur, Brézé, Brissac and Angers, to mention but a few. This region is also known as the
Valley of
Kings.
There are lots of other things to see and do in the area too. It is on the way to the famous "Cadre Noir" equestrian school of Saumur and to the Royal Fontrevault Abbey, the nocturnal extravaganza of Puy du Fou, the Futuroscope of Poitiers, the park of the Mini Châteaux of Amboise and to Doué la Fontaine Zoo.
Not to forget the thousands of priories, manors, monasteries, churches and grand buildings, all of which were constructed using tuffeau, or white sandstone. This stone easily captures the subtle light of the banks of the
Loire and reflects the sensitivity and precision of the builders, stonecutters and sculptors. |
